Kainchi Dham — कैंची धाम Visit Guide

Kainchi Dham is the most famous ashram of Neem Karoli Baba Maharaj Ji, nestled in the Kumaon hills of Uttarakhand on the banks of the Shipra river. Established in 1962, it is today one of India's most visited spiritual destinations, drawing lakhs of devotees from across the world. “Kainchi” (scissors) refers to the two sharp hairpin bends of the road where the ashram is located.

Where is Kainchi Dham?

Kainchi Dham lies on the Nainital–Almora road (NH-109), about 17 km from Nainital and 38 km from Kathgodam, in district Nainital, Uttarakhand, India. The ashram complex includes temples of Hanuman Ji, Shri Ram–Sita, Devi Durga, Vindhyavasini, and the samadhi temple of Maharaj Ji.

How to Reach Kainchi Dham

• By train: Nearest railway station is Kathgodam (about 38 km), well connected to Delhi, Lucknow and Dehradun. Taxis and shared jeeps run from Kathgodam via Bhowali to Kainchi.
• By air: Nearest airport is Pantnagar (about 70 km). Delhi airport is around 300 km away.
• By road: Drive from Delhi (roughly 7–8 hours) via Rampur–Haldwani–Bhowali. Regular buses reach Bhowali (9 km from Kainchi), from where local taxis are available.

Timings & Darshan

• The ashram is generally open for darshan from early morning (around 6:30 AM) to evening (around 6:30 PM).
• Morning and evening aarti at the temples are especially beautiful.
• Photography inside the ashram is restricted — mobile phones are usually deposited at the entrance.
• Simple prasad is offered; maintain silence and cleanliness inside.

The 15 June Bhandara

Every year on 15 June, the foundation day of the ashram, Kainchi Dham hosts a massive Bhandara (community feast) where lakhs of devotees receive prasad of malpua and sabzi. The whole valley echoes with सीताराम सीताराम. If you plan to attend, arrive early — roads are diverted and crowds are enormous.

Best Time to Visit

• March–June: pleasant weather; June has the grand Bhandara.
• September–November: clear skies, beautiful Kumaon views.
• Monsoon (July–August): lush but landslide-prone roads.
• Winter: cold but serene, fewer crowds.

• Bhowali — 9 km, known for orchards.
• Bhimtal & Naukuchiatal — serene lakes nearby.

• Dress modestly; carry a shawl in cooler months.
• Keep vehicles in designated parking — the road is narrow.
